Background

GovNet Communications has been following the very important issue of Sustainable Development and taking the agenda forward through our highly successful annual SDUK conference and our recently launched Future Homes event, Govnet events is now taking a deeper look into the specific agenda of Sustainable Communities, Regeneration, People, Places.

Sustainable communities are places in which people want to live, now and in the future. They embody the principles of sustainable development at local level. This means they improve quality of life for all whilst safeguarding the environment for future generations. The Deputy Prime Minister launched the Communities Plan (Sustainable Communities: Building for the Future) on 5 February 2003. The Plan set out a long-term programme of action for delivering sustainable communities in both urban and rural areas.

Since then, further policies have been developed to encourage regeneration at local level and deliver genuine sustainable communities which meet the needs of existing and future generations through social, economic and environmental change. If we are to create and maintain sustainable communities we need to ensure that there are enough people with the right skills, knowledge and behaviour across the professions – architecture, planning, civil engineering, housing and transport to address community building in the round.

Sustainable Communities 08 will pull together the key themes of the housing growth challenge, developing skills for place-making, environment, transport, sustainable economic development and community regeneration and aim to provide a stimulating event for stakeholders involved in the sustainable communities agenda.

The Conference

As the issue remains high on the local and central government agenda, Sustainable Communities 08: Regeneration, People, Places will offer delegates a unique opportunity to learn how change can be made locally.
